La Jolla Sea Caves and Ecological Reserve Kayak Tour
This is our most popular kayak tour, and for good reason! With no experience needed, you can kayak the La Jolla sea caves and ecological reserve, which boasts an amazing array of scenery and wildlife you can't find anywhere else in San Diego. As you paddle alongside your expert naturalist/biologist guide, chances are good you will see one or more of the following:
- Sea Lions
- Harmless leopard sharks
- Harbor Seals
- Bat Rays
- An abundance of brilliant fish and magnificent sea birds
This is one of the premier eco tourism experiences in San Diego, and no one has better guides to help you explore the natural wonder of the area than Hike Bike Kayak.
We'll launch from La Jolla Shores, kayak through the incredible rock formations and caves (if conditions permit), through the expansive kelp forests and wildlife hot spots, and cap it all off with a kayak surf ride back to the beach. Every season brings a new set of wildlife to get to know, and San Diego's consistently mild climate makes kayaking a great activity any time of year!
Our friendly and accommodating guides are expert naturalists with backgrounds in marine biology, ecology, environmental science, photography, and outdoor recreation. Additionally, our guides hold advanced certifications in kayak instruction, outdoor leadership, wildlife education, and CPR/First Aid.

What is Provided: Kayaks (single or tandem), paddle, life jacket, helmet, and expert naturalist guide. We paddle stable, sit-on-top kayaks. No experience is required. We also sell waterproof cameras for you to capture the highlights of your adventure.
What to Bring: Expect to get wet! Swimsuits are great to wear alone or under a wetsuit. Shorts and a top and/or windbreakers work well too. Don't forget the sunscreen! Most of us go barefoot, but if you would like to bring shoes, make sure they can get wet (Tevas or water shoes are great, but flip-flops are not recommended as they can fall off in the surf). Bring a 'leash' for valuable glasses, or purchase one from our shop. You can also leave a towel and some dry clothes at our shop to use after the tour. Small lockers are available for your valuables, including non-water proof cameras.
IMPORTANT: A kayak is a form of boat. We strongly suggest taking Dramamine or another form of medication if you are sensitive to sea-sickness.
Ages and Participant Requirements:For ages 6 and up. Must be able to swim. No experience is necessary, although the tour does require a bit of physical strength. Our guides will happily teach you how to kayak, and nearly all guests find kayaking to be a very enjoyable experience.
What to Expect and Start Location: We meet at our La Jolla Shores shop, where our friendly staff will check you in and get you fitted for equipment. We will then walk down to the beach as a group (about 3 blocks). At the beach, your guide will provide a brief paddle instruction before helping you launch into the waves. For safety reasons, we do NOT guarantee going into the caves on our tours, but will enter when conditions permit.
Parking: Free parking is available on the side streets. The spots marked "90 minute parking" are NOT recommended, as the tour takes about 2 hours altogether.
Prices, tour times and meeting locations are subject to change without advance notice. Up-to-date information will be provided when you make your reservaton.
We look forward to seeing you soon!
